What exactly is meant by capitalism ? Marx's strawman of freemarket economies ? ( Which was just anti-jewish faith hate....he called non-jewish capitalists Internally circumcised people, capitalism was the jewish faith according to him). Actual free market economies ? I don't think we have either. All "free" market operations are carried out with currency required to be used by government force. And that only to easily be able to operate .gov wealth extraction schemes and hide them in the margins of perception. ( inflationary games and interest rate games). Both are destructively distorting to free markets and rational allocation of production according to wants and needs. At it's core The free market is just a distributed computational scheme to resolve resource scarcity without the application of direct naked force. It's very unlikely that any small group of "experts" can gather enough data and brainpower to enable even a fraction of the information gathering, processing and execution power of economic reality done under a free market economy. Even the USSR with it's vast array of burocrats was hopelessly out of phase with it's economic reality. It even had to resort to importing price levels from Capitalist countries, however out of date or non applicable those prices were to the soviet economy. Many millions of prices had to be set. All the work done on the economic plans of idealists, intellectuals and burocrats pale in comparison to planning that is done collectively by the Free Market. I find that highly ironic. Statists, despite their claimed socialistic goals of elevating the common man are forever locked out of (economic ) reality and thus cannot ever realistically deal with scarcity beyond the usage of state force, for a time.

This is all st up id. Our society was in the recent past fully capable of dealing with human problems. That is before social institutions that were thousands of years old were systematically dismantled by a radicalized elite that had empowered itself to reinvent humanity.

Thank you for 2 really thought provoking episodes. Only just come across your channel and it is some feat to talk solo on philosophical ideas for 40 mins without eliciting a single yawn! As a child of the late 50's this critique makes a lot of sense and I would have to confess to feeling like a post-modernist although I would never have considered myself so even if I had understood the term previously. Having read and listened to a lot of viewpoints over the last couple of years in particular I have concluded that there are some basic values that are non-negotiable for any society to function on a long term basis. I am tolerant of other views as trying to bludgeon, reason or just cajole others to your own point of view rarely works. I probably always had an idea of what I thought was a 'decent' human being so perhaps I was never really a post-modernist. Even in my ignorance I never liked the term! Mark Fisher's view as you explain it is quite compelling but I don't see it as stable state. The dynamics of neoliberalism mean that at some point it will no longer be possible to maintain the realism as more and more people are excluded from 'getting by.' There are ideas of how to restructure society and I am particularly drawn to those which recognise the complexity of human interaction (Hayek got that right!) and make space for that complexity within a framework of agreed values. Sadly, I suspect it will be conflict rather psychedelics that bring about change which will militate against a more consensual outcome.

"Why we can't think beyond capitalism". Man, I hate that title so much. I have little trouble thinking beyond capitalism, and none whatsoever when I confine myself to the dystopian side of the fence. It's incredibly easy to do worse, and if you attempt to do better linking arms with people who don't understand this, it's almost a _certainty_ that you will do worse. From this perspective, denigrating capitalism is the least productive move away from capitalism. Beauty is truth and truth is beauty, and that's all you need to know-so long as you _also_ understand that ugliness is often just truth you don't fully understand yet. Capitalism is not so ugly that any damn thing that sounds good is an obvious improvement.

Bro HUGE [citation needed] on “music hasn’t changed much in the last 24 years”!!! That was a hilariously obvious oversight for such a usually rigorous scholar, I laughed out loud. Fun fact: basically everyone is way more emotionally involved (and laudatory of the innovation within) the music that they listened to as a teenager. E: omg and then you use Eminem’s comeback as an example?? That’s like using don quixote to point out how metatextual novels are - nah, that’s just the literal theme of that specific work!

I shared this on my socials. I think that you aren't taking into account how AI as a technology will force the hand of the populace. I work in the technology industry as an engineer and have personally seen how automation can wipe out entire small economies and I think it will become even bigger as time goes on and as AI tools become more trusted throughout the technology space. In the initial wave, it will lead to a lot of job loss and quite a bit of hate towards the technology sphere. Capital is already spreading a lot of luddite rage on the social medias because they know that a populace mad at a technology won't come after them...the holders of the jobs. But I think it'll be their undoing. The hyper efficiency drive of capitalism will essentially run them out of business. They will create so many machines that nobody will be needed to run the world and everyone can essentially reap the benefits of the technology and automation that was created. As scarcity becomes less and less, there won't be any market and therefore no need for capitalism to be the driving force of our society. It will certainly exist as maybe a smaller aspect of our lives, but I think that over time we will see it disappear. My hope is that there won't be conflict, but I'd be lying if I said it wasn't a big possibility. Current conservative estimates put 50% of jobs being automated by AI in the next 7-10 years with the other side of the spectrum (the optimists) saying it'll be more like 3-5 years. As a person who works in the automation space...I'm thinking it'll be somewhere in the middle. Thanks for your podcast. You really opened my eyes up to the classics by providing an easy to understand synopsis prior to this new AI age.

Capitalism is a economical and psycological issue, not a political-philosofic one. That's why this converation isn't going anywere. You constatly try to blame "capitalism" for corruptin human nature when it's the most forward expression of that nature. All social problems and illnesses are found in every pre capitalist society and they all have to do with power. If anything capitalism tries to level the plaiying fild by diluting power amongst an ever increasing number of players instead of concentrating it amongst a few nucleus of self apointed "wise man". Envy, jealosy, betrail, selfishness, greed, etc... Are emotions that inspired drama since ancient greeks, they are not a product of capitalism, they are psycological traits that will never be adressed properly as problems in society if you obsess with defining them as a consequence of an economical activity. The problemes that arise within capitalism are due to those traits and not the other way around. That's why you strugle to see beyond capitalism, because you're looking at the wrong place, you're staring at the wrong direction.

Brutal raw Capitalism for the poor.... Soft cushy Socialism for the rich. Basic income is a revolution that does not need a revolution. It will be a bloodless revolution #UBI. If everybody on Maui had an unconditional #UBI, far fewer lives would have been lost in this fire. The kicker is that enacting an unconditional #UBI would also save trillions of dollars and only cost hundreds of billions. This is literally one of the problems that #UBI solves. People can't even get housing without an income. With a reliable income, every person has a base level of credit worthiness, especially for housing.

I'm of the firm belief that the major problem with society is this black and white view of the world - that somehow capitalism is good and socialism is bad. I think it is a matter of choosing the correct system to align with your goals. For example: Is the goal to make money and advance industry? Capitalism is a good choice. Is your goal to increase a population's health? Capitalism is probably the wrong way to go, as the financial incentive increases with the number of sick people. Absolute idealism is narrow sighted

That assertion about Capitalism and the antagonism inherent in its class struggle is, at worst, a stupid definition (a capitalist society can be composed entirely of entrepreneurs) and at best an empirical observation that takes accidents as essentials. Perhaps he was never an entrepreneur... but after owning a small business in my 20s (with friends lining up to work for me), I was thrilled to quit and be 'exploited' for a wage that removed the difficulties and stress of self-reliance. And that was in the dying gasps of the industrial age, not quite into the information age, where the work the overlords ask their exploited wage slaves to perform are things like data entry, phone work, coding, computer support, and other lazy monkey tasks. No... the only way to sell people on the communist picture of class struggle and oppression is to suggest self-reliance is out of reach, and to also teach them envy toward the successful and or lucky isn't a moral failing, but rather righteous indignation (envy being the preference that if you don't have something, I shouldn't have it either).

These points are so internally inconsistent. What am I missing? So we dont have a unified culture of art because its constantly new stuff, but we also cant break away from the old culture because we keep rebooting old stuff? To think that references to earlier culture being dominant is exclusive to our time? How many hundreds of years have we been playing Bach's Toccota and Fugue? How many references to classical music were being used in the 1970 rock (hint: a lot). What era was the western movie big? What, they couldnt move past the 1890s culture? Laurence of Arabia was a book before it was a movie! What stagnation that they had to rehash the same story! The Anead is just a copy of the Illiad! Why are there so many greek and roman subjects in Romantic Era paintings? The culture had obviously stagnated! The mulsims philosophers were all just remixing Aristotilian and Platonist philosophy, which was just a response to the Eliatics, Miletians, and Pythagoreans. Why was Shelly writing Prometheus Unbound, a fanfic-sequal to an Ancient Greek play? This isn't an aspect of culture under capitalism. This is an aspect of CULTURE. Having a quote from hamlet show up in Star Trek is no more or less cultural recycling than a rap artist today referencing RUN DMC. IN FACT, if anything, the modern artistic culture is DISTICNTLY un-capitalist with the introduction of sharing art via the internet. Now noone needs an art degree and connections at a famous gallery to become an artist. No one needs the mega media corporations to agree to play their songs on the radio. No one needs a Hollywood Studio to make a film. You just need Instagram, Spotify, and UA-cam respectively. The disunity you talk about is people being free to explore whatever they want outside of the corporate stranglehold on culture.

31:23 Greed isnt the natrual instinct and desire of people; self interest is. The left conflates these two to make this point. That way they can say "look at all the people being kind and working together" without having to acknowledge that they are incentivized to be kind and work together because it naturally benifits them to do so. Ideals are like seeds. They need time and tending to mature. The fact that our worldviews have shifted from 'tiny marble' to 'raisin filled dough' to 'atom with electrons' to tiny tiny TINY little mass with an electron cloud surrounding it shows the natural progression of our models. Just like the creatures on our planet, our models evolve as we learn more, as time progresses. Ideals are the same.

Imagine the nostalgia that gen alpha will feel in 10, 20 years. _"Remember that weird toilet head thing that everyone was raving about? Good times!"_ When brain rot becomes nostalgia, our species will be doomed.
